Reporting to the Vice President of Safety and Technology Policy, the Director, Technology Policy assists in the development of Auto Innovators’ positions and engagement on government policies impacting advanced automotive innovations with an emphasis on privacy and data policy issues. The position will be responsible for educating and engaging with members, allies, stakeholders, and policymakers on advanced policy, including automated and connected vehicles, data privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, privacy, and intellectual property. The position will also be responsible for the initiation and implementation of strategies to advance the industry’s interests and policy positions to decision makers in both government and business. The Director will work closely and regularly with other departments within the Association.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitors, evaluates and apprises the Auto Innovators’ leadership, staff, and members of future trends in technology, technology policy privacy policy, and data privacy policy that impact the industry, including automated and connected vehicles, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and intellectual property issues.
- Prepares comments, correspondence, and testimony on advanced technology policy matters.
- Provides input to Auto Innovators’ state, federal and communications teams regarding draft policies and external messaging.
- Communicates information on Auto Innovators’ advanced technology, privacy, and data policy priorities to federal and state legislative and regulatory bodies.
- Consults regularly with member companies on establishing policy priorities, positions, messaging, and strategy.
- Identifies, develops and maintains relationships with stakeholders and other relevant organizations.
- Serves as a thought leader on advanced policy in panel discussions and in other public forums.
- Represents Auto Innovators in strategic partnership efforts and other public venues advocating adoption of recommended policies and initiatives.
- Recruits and grows coalition members and influence.
- Works closely with other Auto Innovators’ departments to ensure a coherent, coordinated industry effort and proper messaging on issues is achieved.
- Collaborates and manages relationship with outside counsel and consultants.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
· Minimum 5-7 years of experience in technology policy, government policy, or in a trade association.
· Familiarity with federal rulemaking.
· Familiarity with data and privacy policy, technology policy, and artificial intelligence (AI) policy.
· Understanding of the auto industry, a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent understanding of trends in data privacy or technology policy.
- Solid knowledge of the Federal regulatory processes including at the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission as well as at agencies at the Department of Transportation.
- Experience working with federal agencies, Congress, trade associations or corporations on advanced technology policy matters.
- Understanding of advanced automotive technologies and trends.
- Ability to interpret complex technological concepts and effectively communicate them to senior leadership, government officials, and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of special interest groups focusing on advanced and emerging technology policy
- Ability to interpret legislation and regulations and their potential impact on the industry.
- Strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities to generate and maintain consensus among Auto Innovators’ members.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills, ability to speak/represent the Auto Innovators before government officials, member company executives, and the media.
- Ability to identify and anticipate emerging technology policy issues that may impact the industry.
- Bias for action with a demonstrated track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output.
- Ability to make decisions and achieve results in a changing environment.
- Sense of humor and empathy.
- Passion for Auto Innovators’ mission and love for the auto industry.
