The Network Engineer I contributes to delivery of reliable network infrastructure and supporting services across the Middlebury College campuses.
The Network Engineer I supports the network team with logistics and troubleshooting of various network projects, monitoring of network operations, and troubleshooting of network issues.
This is a full time, benefits eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $27.21 - $34.02 per hour.
Core Responsibilities:
- Build, deploy, and maintain network switches, wireless access points, battery backups, and additional network hardware as required
- Supports infrastructure asset lifecycle management, from receiving, to configuration, testing, staging, deployment, operation, and decommissioning and disposal of equipment
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex technology issues involving network services, serving as an escalation point for team and community members troubleshooting infrastructure issues
- Proactively monitor network and data center infrastructure, systems, and services to maximize performance and minimize downtime
- Apply software updates and security patches to network infrastructure
- Inventory infrastructure assets and document network infrastructure solutions
- Collaborate with ITS colleagues and consult with clients across the community about technology challenges and opportunities
- Participate in the ITS Infrastructure Services On-Call rotation; flexible hours are required to accommodate maintenance windows and/or address unplanned outages.
Requirements
- Experience with wired and wireless technologies and a strong aptitude for technology
- Familiarity with core networking concepts and protocols, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP
- Familiarity with fundamental network building blocks including switches, routers, firewalls, etc
- Familiarity with Windows, MacOS, Linux, or other commonly networked devices
- Familiarity with Internet fundamentals, including ISPs, web servers, email servers, etc
- Preferred: experience with Palo Alto Networks, Juniper, Arista, and Mellanox network hardware
- Preferred: experience with programming and scripting languages, including interacting with application programming interfaces for various services
- This is an on-campus position involving hands-on work on infrastructure, including occasional emergency visits to address critical infrastructure failures; living within a 1-hour commutable distance or less is highly recommended
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Occasional data center related activities such as racking switches, routers, firewalls, servers, etc., as well as accessing network closets. Shipping and receiving computers, servers, network hardware, etc.
