Please note: This is a W2 contract role based at Torrance, CA (onsite).
We are seeking an experienced System Engineer to join our IT infrastructure team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the configuration, installation, and maintenance of servers, as well as physical rack management in data centers. This role requires a strong understanding of hardware, operating systems, and networking fundamentals, along with the ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Install, configure, and maintain servers (physical and virtual) in data centers or client sites.
Perform server hardware setup, including racking and cabling of servers, storage devices, and network switches.
Ensure proper rack management, including organizing cabling and labeling, ensuring efficient space utilization, and maintaining cooling and power requirements.
Monitor and troubleshoot server performance to ensure optimal operation, identifying and resolving hardware and software issues.
Deploy and configure operating systems (Windows Server, Linux/Unix), hypervisors (VMware, Hyper-V), and associated server software.
Collaborate with networking and security teams to ensure that server installations comply with networking, security, and data protection standards.
Perform patch management, firmware upgrades, and routine maintenance tasks on servers and associated hardware.
Provide level 2/3 support for escalated server and infrastructure issues.
Participate in capacity planning and optimization efforts, ensuring that the environment is scalable and efficient.
Document server configurations, changes, and procedures, maintaining up-to-date records for troubleshooting and audits.
Assist in disaster recovery planning and implementation, including backup and restore operations.
Work with vendors and suppliers to source hardware, manage warranties, and escalate technical issues as needed.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
3-5 years of experience in system engineering, with a focus on server installation, configuration, and rack management.
Strong hands-on experience with server hardware, including Dell, HP, Cisco UCS, or similar enterprise servers.
Experience with racking and cabling in a data center environment.
Proficiency in operating system installation and management for Windows Server, Linux, and virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V).
Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, DNS, DHCP, and basic switch configuration.
Experience in backup solutions and understanding of storage technologies (SAN, NAS).
Familiarity with remote server management tools (e.g., iLO, iDRAC, or IPMI).
Ability to lift and install heavy equipment (servers, storage devices) into racks.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Windows Server, VMware Certified Professional (VCP), or CompTIA Server+.
Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and hybrid server environments.
Familiarity with automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or scripting (Bash, PowerShell).
Experience with server monitoring tools such as Nagios, SolarWinds, or Zabbix.
