In the community, TDOC supervises 79,000 offenders on probation, parole, or community corrections. The department operates 44 probation/parole offices in 13 districts across the state. The Tennessee Department of Correction operates safe and secure prisons and provides effective community supervision in order to enhance public safety.
Job Overview
The Electronic Security Systems Director leads and oversees the design, installation, maintenance, and strategic planning of electronic security systems across statewide correctional facilities and other agency locations. This role is responsible for safeguarding agency assets, employees, and sensitive information by supervising a team of Electronic Security Systems Support Specialists.
The Director ensures that all electronic security systems, including video surveillance, door control, alarm systems, and network infrastructure are fully operational and meet the security needs of the agency. The position demands a highly motivated individual with a strong technical background in industrial automation, low-voltage systems, and IT network support, combined with excellent leadership and project management skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership and Supervision: Supervise a team of Electronic Security Systems Support Specialists, mentoring staff and providing expertise in areas such as cabling, fiber termination, PLC setup, and video camera installation.
- Project Oversight: Manage capital projects, reviewing technical drawings and specifications to ensure system designs meet agency security requirements.
- Systems Fabrication: Oversee the fabrication and installation of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and other devices for controlling doors, video systems, and intercoms, ensuring these systems are properly integrated into security racks and cabinets.
- Technical Diagnostics: Utilize advanced diagnostic software to monitor network systems and ensure the proper functioning of electronic security components, including IP cameras, fire alarms, and PLCs.
- Inspections and Compliance: Conduct random inspections of state-issued computers to ensure compliance with acceptable-use policies, reporting violations, as necessary.
- Problem Analysis: Analyze trouble tickets and system data to identify trends, problem areas, or needed improvements, taking proactive steps to address technical challenges.
- Emergency Response: Ensure that the IT team responds promptly to life safety issues in correctional facilities, maintaining readiness for on-site response within a four-hour window, day or night.
- Strategic Planning: Collaborate on the development and implementation of strategic plans for electronic security systems, ensuring that policies and procedures align with agency goals and regulatory requirements.
- Expertise Maintenance: Maintain expert-level knowledge of multi-user computer systems, security systems, and network infrastructure, including video systems and door control technologies.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and relative work experience.
- Five years of experience in one or a combination of the following areas: software development for industrial automation, industrial electronics design or repair, installation and maintenance of low-voltage alarms and camera systems, or network hardware and server maintenance.
- Expert-level proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing computer-related equipment and security electronic systems.
