Feeder for Horses
POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Program Director, Equine Manager or Barn Manager of Hands and Hearts for Horses (HHH), this position provides morning and afternoon feedings on Saturdays and Sundays and holidays for a herd of 24 therapeutic riding horses in accordance with Hands and Hearts for Horses guidelines. Responsibilities include measuring feed and supplements as defined by HHH guidelines, distributing feed in designated stalls for specific horses, overseeing feeding and returning horses to designated pastures.
HOURS:
HHH will cover no more than 16 hours per weekend, or 4 hours per feeding, at the current rate of pay for this position. Any time over 16 hours may be considered for approval given extenuating circumstances and must be approved by the Barn Manager and Program Director. Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (may vary due to extenuating circumstances).
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Preparing Feed Buckets for Horses
• Follow feed and supplement guidelines defined on whiteboard and in barn notebook. This includes medications.
• Measures feed for each horse with specified measuring scoops.
• On Saturday morning during lessons, all horses need to be brought into their stalls and fed before any lessons begin.
Follows Feeding Sequence for Horses
• Brings horses into barn and into stalls following HHH guidelines.
• Returns horses to designated pastures and pens using halters and lead ropes.
Follows Rules defined in barn notebook regarding Weather Conditions:
• Becomes familiar with and follows rules set out in barn notebook for what to do with horses in certain weather conditions.
Follows emergency guidelines regarding horses and facility:
• Contacts and guidelines are set forth in the barn notebook.
Other Duties:
• Performs other duties as required by the Program Director and Barn Manager.
• Wears neat, appropriate attire, no shorts or sleeveless shirts. Must wear closed toe shoes, such as boots or tennis shoes.
• Must be able to handle hard, physical labor in hot, humid conditions.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILL CHARACTERISTICS:
• Previous or current work in an equestrian setting preferred.
• Comfortable being in close contact with handling horses.
• Horse knowledge preferred.
• Training will be provided.
• Ability to drive/operate farm equipment.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:
• Work on holidays.
• Complete a background check and pass HHH qualifications.
• Pass a drug test (will be scheduled through HHH).
• Carry items up to 50lbs: hay, feed bags, large, full buckets of water, etc.
• 18 years of age, hold a valid driver’s and provide reliable transportation.
• Consistent and reliable.
• Offer good communication, take direction well and adjust to frequent changes in routines.
• Good attitude and personable amongst staff, clients, volunteers, visitors, etc.
• Handle constructive criticism respectfully, tactfully and professionally.
• Provide a minimum of 3 non-relative references.

Drug Test Policy & Procedures
POLICY:
All potential and current employees are subject to pre-employment drug testing, either 5 or 10 panel urine test. All employees must sign the “Substance Abuse Policy” prior to employment.
PROCEDURES:
Drug testing will be scheduled by HHH Executive Director or Program Director. HHH has an account at this facility and will be billed for screening.
AVAILABILITY:
Drug testing provided Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
