Job Summary
The Director of Risk Management will collaborate with department directors and the executive team to develop and implement plans to anticipate, address, and mitigate the effects of various risks and business interruptions. The Director of Risk will oversee the organization's comprehensive insurance and risk management program, assessing and identifying risks that could impede the organization's reputation, safety, security, or financial success. The Director of Risk will ensure that emergency preparedness activities, procedures, and policies are current. They will review the company's operational systems, including financial and information services, to ensure compliance with corporate control requirements and measures.
Responsibilities
- Conducts risk assessments, collecting and analyzing documentation, statistics, reports, and market trends for various departments and functions, analyzing the potential business impact of unpredictable business interruptions such as natural disasters, security breaches, legal claims, and market disruptions.
- Reviews and assesses risk management policies and protocols; makes recommendations and implements modifications and improvements.
- Recommends and implements risk management solutions such as insurance, safety and security policies, business continuity plans, or recovery measures.
- Reviews and analyzes metrics and data such as cash flow, inventory, breakage, and employee activity that could uncover fraudulent behavior.
- Develops and maintains a business recovery plan and procedure; reviews, revises, and expands existing plans and protocols.
- Collaborates with IT staff to develop and implement best practices for protecting and restoring data and systems in the event of natural disasters, viruses, and hackers.
- Identifies and implements recovery operations and methods to allow the company to function at limited or partial capacity if part or all of the infrastructure is damaged or destroyed.
- Creates and facilitates practice drills for plan execution.
- Develops and provides staff training on risk management and disaster recovery.
- Works with health, safety, security, and environmental staff and local, state, and federal agencies to align the organization's emergency management plan with established best practices and community standards.
- Oversees the operational and financial aspects of emergency preparedness and disaster management.
- Drafts and presents risk reports and proposals to executive leadership and senior staff.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, or a similar field is required.
- A minimum of five years of management experience, with at least two years in a risk management position, is required.
Preferred Skills
- Master's degree preferred.
- Enterprise-level risk management experience preferred.
- Experience building risk management programs.
- Thorough understanding of policies and best practices of risk management.
- Excellent strategic, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Ability to think through hypothetical situations and concepts and to identify risks and weaknesses in various business processes.
- Ability to collaborate with others to develop an emergency plan.
- Good accounting and internal auditing skills.
- Proficient understanding and use of representative sampling techniques.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Overnight travel 30 to 50%.
- Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
- Walk short distances.
- Reach above and/or below the shoulder.
- Handle/grasp documents or office equipment.
- Sit and/or stand for short or extended periods.
- Lift/carry/move objects, files, and documents up to 10 pounds.
- Work in an office environment using standard office equipment.
- Talk, listen, and speak clearly on the telephone.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
