Position Description
The MacOS System Engineer will provide the design, configuration, installation, maintenance, management and upgrade of Apple hardware and software systems and associated peripherals in support of Chemical Science Laboratory’s (CSL) scientific research and development mission. Other system administration duties may also include general helpdesk support, assisting users with Google Apps for Government (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Voice, etc.), printer support, conferencing, software and hardware installation, and documentation.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Direct customer support and helpdesk ticket response for MacOS users - builds, image creation, patching, software installation and updates, operating system upgrades.
- Design, configuration, implementation, and support of all MacOS devices within CSL.
- Google Apps for Government user support (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Voice, Meet, etc.).
- Documentation updates of processes and procedures, and user help docs.
- Assists with various inventory processes.
- General user support and helpdesk response.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications/Requirements
- In-depth understanding of macOS, including its architecture, security features, user management, and troubleshooting techniques.
- MDM and Orchestration Tools: Familiarity with Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions like Jamf, Mosyle, Munki, or Apple Business Manager (ABM) for mass device deployment, configuration, and security.
- Be able to create policies and tasks to automate support day-to-day operations.
- Have the ability to provision/re-provision new and existing systems in a timely manner.
- Detailed knowledge of integrating Smartcard (HSPD-12 or other) and other authentication mechanisms (Hardware Tokens, etc.) on Mac systems.
- Ability to implement configuration baselines: DISA STIGs, USGCB, etc. both with and without MDM/Orchestration Tools
- Mac Command Line Knowledge: Ability to work in the command line to resolve issues
- Understanding of advanced patching concepts and automation and the ability to patch systems on a frequent basis to meet various policies and meet Government security requirements.
- Have the ability to patch 100+ MacOSX systems through a semi-manual or automated process to limit user interruption.
- Experience with various third-party security applications (McAfee/Nessus/Trellix, etc.)
- Understanding of Active Directory/Azure AD Integration:
- Apple Ecosystem: Knowledge of Apple's deployment tools and services like Apple School Manager (ASM) and Apple Configurator
- Communication: Ability to clearly explain technical concepts to users with varying levels of technical knowledge.
- Problem-solving: Skills to diagnose and resolve complex issues related to Mac devices and software.
- Customer Service: Providing excellent user support and resolving their technical issues efficiently.
- Adaptability: The Apple ecosystem constantly evolves, so a willingness to learn and stay updated is crucial
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related discipline, or commensurate work experience.
- Demonstrated experience in macOS system administration and direct customer support.
- Experience providing support to Apple macOS computer users, and thorough familiarity with macOS operating system and support tools (JAMF, ABM, etc.)
- Possess current Apple certifications (Apple Certified IT Professional, Apple Certified Support Professional)
Salary Range: $75-$125k DOE
