As the
Associate Director, HIMS (Health Information Management), you will manage three HIMS departments/locations:
Banner North Colorado Medical Center (Greeley, CO), Banner McKee Medical Center (Loveland, CO), and Banner Fort Collins Medical Center (Fort Collins, CO). This will be on
ON-SITE position that will require travel between each of the three locations as needed. You will have sitting space at each facility. You will oversee a team of 10 direct reports and 2 indirect reports. As part of our HIMS department, you will have an exceptional corporate leadership team as well as a very supportive and collaborative local leadership team. Business hours are flexible Monday-Friday, 8 hour shifts (generally 8am – 4:30pm).

Position Summary
This position is responsible for guiding and supporting health information functions and services at designated facility(s) or functional areas within Banner Health. This position is responsible for the achievement of key performance indicators, including data analysis and development of action plans when goals are not met. The position is responsible for successfully managing the operational and administrative activities of Health Information Management Services (HIMS), including hiring and training staff, goal setting and measurement, monitoring and measuring staff competencies, assigning work, and performance management. This position promotes a collaborative, open, and inclusive work environment within a highly integrated organization on matters related to health information operations and related programs and services. This position may work directly with facility leadership related to facility-specific issues and opportunities. This position will identify opportunities for workflows to enhance related functions, which will be provided to the Regional Director or above for consideration. This position will generally lead staff at medium to large hospitals, across multiple facilities, or across multiple teams within a smaller hospital.
Core Functions
- Manages the operational staff and functions within the HIMS Department to include scheduling of staff and monitoring and assignment of workload, monitoring the productivity and quality of work performed by staff, and reviewing performance with individual staff and developing action plans for performance improvement. Assists each employee with development of goals and reviewing goal progress. Performs semi-annual and annual assessment. Responsible for hiring, coordinating training and education, and providing leadership to build and improve skills for career development of staff.
- Supports innovation by evaluating the effectiveness of existing and potential workflows, processes, and technology applications. Acts as a subject matter expert for functional usage of the electronic medical record and documentation requirements. Maintains current knowledge of additional electronic applications related to HIMS and ROI functions. Works with Sr. Director, Director, IT staff and vendors for concerns, issues, enhancements, or updates to all applicable applications utilized by HIMS and ROI.
- Ensures implementation and education of policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state and local regulatory guidelines and minimize risk. May provide feedback/suggestions on related policy updates. May provides policy and procedural updates and education to other Banner Health staff, as applicable. Assists with the investigation, follow up, documentation and reporting of HIPAA events and Requests to Amend Medical Records. This may include following up with physicians or other clinical staff and/or the Privacy Department related to requested changes/supplements to the medical record.
- Manages coding support processes to ensure completeness of medical record documentation to support coding and billing of services. Works with providers and leaders to develop and manage work processes that expedite the speed and accuracy of proper documentation. Participates in process by reaching out to provider and/or facility leadership when escalation is required.
- Position may participate in facility-based meetings related to health information or leadership. This position will ensure compliance of applicable standards for the Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulations and will participate in activities and surveys related to accreditation and regulatory agencies. This position will also work collaboratively with other corporate departments such as acute and ambulatory coding, CDI, other revenue cycle teams, compliance, or privacy to ensure performance results and compliance with regulatory guidelines.
- This position may serve as Custodian of Medical Records. May assist the Director by giving deposition and representing Banner Health in court proceedings as needed and as required by subpoenas and court orders. Works with Risk Management/Litigation and Legal Counsel to provide timely response in litigated matters and to ensure adherence to judicial proceedings.
- Accountable for departmental budget as it relates to staffing and other direct operating expenses. Works with Regional Director to investigate variances and develop action plans as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Must possess a strong knowledge of health information and healthcare as normally obtained through the completion of an associate’s degree or above in health information, healthcare administration or business.
Certification is required in at least one of the following areas within one year of entering the position: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS), Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or Certified in Healthcare Privacy Compliance (CHPC) through Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA).
Must possess five plus years of relevant experience in HIMS, plus highly developed leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a matrix model. Must possess a thorough knowledge of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and associated computer applications and their applicability to the healthcare environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in HIM, healthcare administration or related field preferred.
Prior leadership experience as a Manager in HIM or related field preferred.
Additional Related Education And/or Experience Preferred.
