About Movley
Movley is building modern quality control for retail and e-commerce brands.
Most retail products you buy undergo testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) regularly to ensure they meet specifications that comply with regulations in their target markets. The TIC industry for consumer goods is a $30+ billion market that's completely outdated. However, it's growing rapidly at 5-6% annually due to increasing compliance and quality risks. Some of the biggest companies in the space still book testing over excel sheets and emails.
Movley is modernizing this industry to give today's retail brands the experience they've always wanted. We contribute to better quality products in the marketplace, less waste, and to a more sustainable planet. We have worked with over 800 brands, and are backed by Y Combinator and other top investors.
About The Role
As part of our founding team, you will take the lead on our engineering efforts. This will be a core addition to our team as we continue to build Movley. You will work one-on-one with the CEO and founding team to ship product features, speak with users, brainstorm product direction, and shape the early company culture.
Who’s a Good Fit?
- Self-Starter: You're a self-starter with a passion for solving challenging and meaningful problems.
- Natural Builder: You're a natural-born builder, curious about the world and how to solve its problems. You've pursued this curiosity through personal projects over time.
- Exceptional: You're an exceptional engineer who builds features in a third of the time that most competent people think is possible. Correspondingly you are an incredibly fast learner of new technologies.
- Product Minded: It’s about building a great customer experience first for you, all the cool software you write to get there is secondary.
- Intense: Expect talented, motivated, intense, and fun co-workers.
- Fun: You can smile/joke/enjoy yourself through the pain and the slog, and can lift up others even when things are objectively not going well. It’s the startup rollercoaster!
- Aspiring Founders: Bonus points if you aspire to build your own meaningful company in the future.
What are we looking for?
In addition to the personal qualities mentioned above, this role requires the following:
Must Haves
- US work permit (we do not currently sponsor H1-Bs)
- 3+ years of software experience (pet projects count depending on time and effort given)
- Excellence in NodeJS, Python, React, Typescript, NextJS
- Some experience building LLMs-based applications (e.g. OpenAI API)
- Demonstration of autonomy and entrepreneurial spirit (side projects, previous companies)
Nice to Haves
- In NYC, or willing to relocate.
- Previous startup experience
- Machine learning experience
- Prior leadership experience growing & managing technical teams
- Prior experience in manufacturing, e-commerce, or supply-chain
NSFABIQ - Not So Frequently Asked But Important Questions
- Why should I join Movley and not start my own startup?
If you’re accepted into our team, there is no question that we believe you’re capable of running your company. In fact you can be sure that we have all the faith in you that you’ll probably start your own unicorn at some point. But startups are (famously) hard enough already, and it’s usually good practice to see how a good one is run before you start.
As a founding member of our team, you’ll get to experience all the great parts of being a founder (autonomy, talking to customers, shipping, culture creation) without any of the overhead (fundraising, operations, taxes) and risk. Additionally, expect motivated, hard working, and intense co-workers that you could potentially work with in the future. In the end, if you choose to leave to start your own journey, we’ll do everything we can to support you. *
What’s the interview process like?
We vary the application process based on what we can already gather from your resume and previous experiences but you should expect (1) a screening phone call, (2) technical screens and interviews with the teams, and (3) paid trial for a week on-site at the office.
Technology
For our interfaces, we use NextJS with PostgreSQL as our database. Our styling and UI are guided by Untitled UI principles, though we're considering a move to Tailwind CSS. Our backend is dockerized, runs on Heroku, and is written in TypeScript using NextJS as our framework.
Looking ahead, we plan to expand into LLM-based applications, mobile development, and deeper data science.
